The royal necropolis of the Saadian Tombs dates back to the end of the 16th century during the period of the rich Saadian dynasty, and in particular the reign of Sultan Ahmed al-Mansour.
The Saadian Tombs are located in the heart of the royal quarter of the Kasbah next to the Kasbah Mosque also known as the Moulay El Yazid Mosque.
Because of the beauty of their decoration, they are a major attraction for visitors to the ochre city.
Built from 1578, they were hidden in the 18th century and were only rediscovered in 1917 by French archaeologists.
The mausoleum consists of 3 rooms, where the bodies of about sixty Saadians, their successors and their families rest. It also houses the tombs of the soldiers and servants of the dynasty.
The most important building of the Saadian Tombs is the main mausoleum with the Hall of the Twelve Columns where the tomb of Sultan Ahmed al-Mansur is located.
We are captivated by the coloured ceramics with varied patterns and shapes as well as by the richness of the ornamentation, the sculpted reliefs on the walls, the arches and the cedar ceilings, it is sumptuous!
A visit to the Saadian Tombs is a must during your stay in Marrakech.
