The Majorelle Garden is a botanical garden of about 300 species on nearly 1 hectare, an Art Deco villa labelled “Maisons des Illustres” since 2011, and a museum of Berber history, in Marrakech.
The Majorelle Garden was created in 1931 by the French painter Jacques Majorelle, inspired by oases, Islamic gardens and Spanish-Hispano-Moorish gardens. At first, the garden served as a source of inspiration for the painter. In 1937, the artist created Majorelle blue, an ultramarine/cobalt blue that is both intense and clear, which he used to paint the walls of his villa, and then the entire garden to create a living tableau that he opened to the public in 1947.
This garden is a living work of art in motion, composed of a great variety of exotic plants and rare species that he brought back from his travels around the world: cacti, yuccas, water lilies, lotuses, water lilies, jasmine, bougainvillea, palms, coconut palms, banana trees, bamboo trees, carob trees, agaves, cypresses … and adorned with fountains, basins, fountains, ceramic jars, paths, pergolas …
Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Bergé made the place famous by buying it in 1980, after years of neglect. It is now owned by the Fondation Jardin Majorelle, and is one of Morocco’s top tourist attractions with almost 600,000 visitors a year.
The Jardin Majorelle Foundation also includes the Yves Saint Laurent Museum in Marrakech, which opened in October 2017. This important museum, located in Yves Saint Laurent’s former artist’s studio on the ground floor of the Villa Majorelle, was inaugurated in 2011. Over an area of 200m², a collection of more than 600 objects (jewellery, weapons, leather, basketry, weaving, carpets, clothes…) representative of the richness of Berber art are on display.
