Located just beside the Jemaâ el-Fna square in the medina, the Koutoubia Mosque is the most important in Marrakech and was one of the largest in the Islamic world when it was completed in 1158.
Its name, which in English means “mosque of the booksellers“, comes from the numerous book stalls that surrounded the monument after its construction was completed. It is emblematic with its large minaret of more than 70 meters high (77 m with the spire).
As with the rest of the city’s mosques, entry is forbidden to non-Muslims, so you will have to be content with observing it from the outside.
Around the mosque is the Sidi Ali Bel Kacem cemetery, the gardens of the Parc Lalla Hasna and the former French consulate, now the residence of the consul.
