The Kasbah is a large fortified district in the southwestern part of the medina of Marrakech, which historically served as a citadel (kasbah) and royal palace complex (Dar al- Makhzen) within the city. A large part of the district is still occupied today by the royal palace, which serves as the residence of the King of Morocco when he is in Marrakech.
The Kasbah is home to traditional souks, trendy cafes and street food vendors selling grilled meats and bissara (bean soup). The medina’s imposing door, Bab Agnaou, dates from the 12th century and is shaped like a horseshoe and decorated with Koranic inscriptions.
Near the Moulay El Yazid mosque, the Saadian tombs are royal tombs set in chambers decorated with mosaics and stucco. The huge ruined El Badi palace, nearby, dates from the 16th century.
Near the Kasbah, to the north-east, after the Place des Ferblantiers, is also the Bahia Palace, and to the east, the old Jewish quarter, the Mellah. At the southern end of the Kasbah and the city lie the vast Agdal gardens.
