Located in the north-eastern part of the Kasbah, the El Badi Palace (El Badiî or El Badia) literally means “Palace of the incomparable“. Built at the end of the 16th century, it was erected by the Saadian Sultan Ahmed al-Mansur to commemorate the defeat of the Portuguese at Oued al-Makhazin (the Battle of the Three Kings).
Today, there are few traces left of the Palace’s splendour, only ruins to be visited.
One thing you must concentrate on the huge inner courtyard (135 metres long and 110 metres wide) surrounded by high walls in pisé, with its large basins and its gardens that smell of orange blossom.
One of its interests is nevertheless its terrace which gives a plunging view on the esplanade and especially a panorama on the roofs of Marrakech with the Atlas mountains in the background.
Since 2011, the El Badi Palace has been used as a stage for the annual comedy festival, Marrakech du Rire, organised by Jamel Debbouze.
