The Bahia Palace (the beautiful or brilliant one) is the tourist spot by excellence in Marrakech.
It is one of the masterpieces of Moroccan architecture and art.
Located in the medina of Marrakech, this vast residence (8 hectares) in the form of a vast riad with mosque, mausoleum, hammam, harem, stables… (the largest, the most imposing, and the most sumptuous palace of Morocco of its time) was built on the orders of the Grand Vizier Ahmed Ben Moussa between 1860 and 1874 to accommodate his 4 wives and his 24 concubines.
We are surprised by the beauty of the rooms and their decorative details which make this place absolutely remarkable! The rooms follow one another (about 150 rooms) with the same splendour, all richly decorated with marble, moucharabiehs, sculptures and paintings on beech and cedar wood, stucco, zellige, the first stained glass windows of the Maghreb, housed in heterogeneous buildings, several times modified in the course of time, organised around numerous courtyards, patios, Islamic garden and Andalusian-Hispano-Moorish gardens, lush, refreshing, planted with orange trees, banana trees, Japanese lilacs, cypresses, hibiscus, geraniums, jasmines. …, irrigated by khettaras.
Visiting the Bahia Palace is a real treat! If you only had to visit one touristic place in Marrakech, it would be this one!
