The Zagora Desert is located in southern Morocco, about 355 kilometres away from Marrakech, and takes about 6 hours to reach. You will pass through the Atlas Mountains, Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate. Although the journey may seem long, the trip to Zagora from Marrakech is perfect for a short desert getaway of two days and one night.
The town of Zagora is dominated by the Jebel Zagora, and has a vast palm grove. It is truly the last town before the desert, the starting point for expeditions to the Deep South, as well as many hikes to the countless oases of the Draa Valley or the Sahara Desert. A famous sign in the centre of the city indicates “Timbuktu 52 days”, which is from where the Saadian expedition to Timbuktu started in 1591.
Discover the Sahara, and enjoy camel rides or quad biking to watch the sun rise and set over the dunes of Zagora. You can of course sleep in a Bedouin tent in the Moroccan desert and enjoy the night and the desert sky.
