The Marrakech Museum, located in the Medina of Marrakech next to the Ben Youssef Medersa, is a palace built on a 2,108 m² plot of land with a vast patio of 709 m², typical of Moorish art, which has been transformed into a private museum and a venue for cultural activities.
This former palace, where Mehdi Mnebhi, former Minister of Defence of Sultan Moulay Abdelaziz, resided, was built at the end of the 19th century.
It was restored and turned into a museum by Omar Benjelloun, who was a great Moroccan collector and patron.
The main part of the museum consists of its magnificent patio, marked by its imposing copper chandelier, and rooms arranged around it.
On the ground floor are exhibited hammered copper objects, Berber weapons and jewellery and clothes. The objects are still used and worn in the mountains.
The zellij (small tiles) decorate the floor, walls and columns, while the fine woodcarving in the arcades impresses and seduces. The two doors on either side of the inner courtyard are sumptuous with their painted wooden panels! On the sides, small rooms are used as galleries with display cabinets showing various collectors’ items.
The first floor lounge has a Spanish-Moorish decor and cedar furniture.
You can also visit the traditional hammam inside the building.
Since 1995, the Marrakech Museum has only organised temporary exhibitions on contemporary art and Moroccan cultural heritage.
The museum also organises and hosts various events such as concerts, theatre and choreography shows, film screenings, symposiums, study days and workshops.
