The Merzouga desert is 562 kilometres away from the red city of Marrakech, and it takes between 9 and 10 hours to get there by road. The trip to the Merzouga desert from Marrakech involves at least 3 days and 2 nights, so it is usually done in 2 stages.
You will cross the magnificent Atlas Mountains via the incredible Tizi n’Tichka pass which rises to 2,260 metres. On the way, you will pass by the Kabash of Ait Ben Haddou then Ouarzazate to discover the Kasbah of Taourirt. You will head towards the Dades Valley and cross the incredible Todra Gorges. Finally, the mountains give way to palm groves, then to sand.
The Merzouga desert is the most popular in Morocco and is the most visited by travellers who have a little more time to invest in this adventure.
In this desert, you can enjoy large sand dunes of more than 150 meters whose yellow or ochre colour changes throughout the day. You can also watch the sunset to the rhythm of the camels’ strides across the dunes.
Travelling through these wide open spaces with all the shades of colour that make up the magic of the desert, admiring the starry sky lying on the sand, sleeping in a bivouac, drinking tea at the end of the day and enjoying moments shared with the Saharawi Bedouin, the men with the indigo blue cheich. So many elements for a great adventure to make this trip unforgettable.
